Waiting in the Eastside Cafe to start the tour of this years visual arts offerings through The Event. I’m the only ambassador who’s turned up so far, but wait, I can see someone else looking lost must be part of the tour, (I walked past the venue twice trying to locate it with the maps compass feature on my 3GS – never works for me!).

The Event tour took us around some amazing spaces each independently curated with a series of interventions and site specific work along the way.

Starting at The Lombard Method we were greeted by the artists from Crowd6. The work played with some really interesting approaches to interpretation through revisiting or citing specific footprints from visual arts and media culture. The digital reinvention of kings and queens was especially inviting, along side an alternative rendering of Jackson Pollock through an embroidered process.

Next stop was Mona Casey’s contribution to The Event. Casey curated the show through web, selecting artworks from the Axis database. The results transform an industrial environment in Casey’s signature hang on cardboard and makeshift gallery Walls. Interesting balance between the curator as artist. Very high quality of work throughout.

Next stop Grand Union, break through project space and studio group, Artists with a business plan!  Excellent collection of artist publications to browse and a vast array of giveaway art from Springhill Institute.  We skipped past Eastside projects today, but thought it best to save that for tomorrow’ private view.

In conclusion, I’m left wondering if The Event is the new Biennale for Birmingham!
